Clearly if one wants to show that recent temperatures in this decade are the warmest every, one must adjust the temperatures in the 1930s downward. The GISS dataset, a subordinate to NASA, received just such a data adjustment.
There has been no valid explanation as to why this adjustment was needed. Other datasets have also received adjustments, even sea level data, as we will see later in this section.
