The art of finding the Crack in the Alarmist Set of Beliefs

As one discusses climate science with a believer in AGW/DAGW it is easy for most to fight the war of facts.   I personally have done that numerous times.  As the force field of defense goes up the opportunity is lost to find a crack in that defense system.   One such friend ended up saying “ I have more facts than you do.”   The entire process was useless in the sense that it allowed this friend the opportunity to reaffirm his beliefs and to gain a temporary level of righteousness that goes with that state.

But there is a better way.  In every alarmist there is a set of contradictory beliefs and lurking concerns.   That provides the opportunity for skeptics to find the crack and to create some curiosity increase, some openness to engage in a non-defensive manner.   There is therefore the art of finding the crack, whether it is the realization of the unintended consequences from the GND or other policies.  It could be from just some current irrefutable weather trends.  They are there in any person’s outlook for the alarmist position is the earth is ending in some sense in the time associated with your lifetime and the answer is to give the alarmist all of the power over society.    There are an infinite number of cracks available in that situation.  For some cracks are sealing with epoxy and not going to cause any drift in tribal beliefs.

If someone were to make a statement about their future investments that seemed to be a certainty to them, but someone else came along and proved that the assumptions they had made were false, then the investor would take pause.   The phenomena of a crack is in every day life.    The hard aspect in having an open discussion on climate is the great complexity in the science and the ability to learn and process all of that uncertainty.   Alarmists have taken advantage of that condition and made copious claims and predictions, and even deceived climate scientists.

There are a good many cracks and part of the exercise of openS is to identify them and tell stories about how they were opened and the curiosity flowed.   There is a skill set associated with this process.  Knowing that every individual is different, and given that the process has to be tailored to small different groups means that the material constructed also has to gather the catalog of cracks and what questions to ask and progression of discussion to have embedded the process to cause a more curious person, curious enough to read on and to learn more.
